The Challenge: A leading hot sauce manufacturer faced a major issue in their production process. They were using progressive cavity (PC) pumps under a vacuum tank to de-aerate hot sauce, transferring it at a viscosity of 20-50 cps, ambient temperature, and at pressures below 50 psi. The PC pumps required frequent maintenance due to the non-lubricating and corrosive nature of the hot sauce. Each of their three pumps needed a rebuild every 6–8 months at $5,000 in parts per rebuild, costing them approximately $26,000 annually. Being PC pumps, maintenance was difficult as the parts were physically long and bulky. Additionally, long lead times for those spare parts caused them significant downtime, lost productivity, and higher operating costs.
The Solution: Already using Fristam centrifugal and positive displacement pumps in their plant, the manufacturer turned to their Fristam distributor for a better solution. The distributor recommended the Fristam FDS-2 twin screw pump with a Hastelloy wet end to withstand the salt and vinegar corrosion.
The Fristam FDS pump handles a wide range of viscosities and extreme conditions, including high differential pressures and corrosive environments. Its low-pulsation, hygienic design ensures reliable performance, gentle product handling, and seamless cleaning-in-place (CIP). Built to handle the demands of a full vacuum and the corrosive combination of vinegar and salt, the FDS pump also has a more compact design than PC pumps, making it ideal for their limited production space.
Once installed, the FDS pump excelled in every aspect. It operated under full vacuum conditions, withstood corrosive ingredients, and reduced downtime by eliminating frequent maintenance. In fact the Fristam FDS-2 pump ran for nearly 3 years without needing any attention. The manufacturer no longer had to worry about spare part delays, resulting in smoother and more reliable operations.
