Read how the Fristam FDS Twin Screw Pump helped automate cheese production, reduce waste, and cut downtime—paying for itself in under a year.
The Challenge: A leading French dairy manufacturer was building a new production facility in Brazil to produce a variety of cheeses. Their goal was a fully automated plant with integrated software and hardware for real-time monitoring and control. The new facility required a high level of efficiency, minimal maintenance downtime, and gentle product handling to preserve the integrity of the cheese.
A key challenge was finding a pump that could efficiently transfer various cheese types—ranging from stringy to medium-to-high-moisture—from the same vats while maintaining curd integrity and controlling costs. The dairy manufacturer turned to their Fristam Pumps distributor for an answer.
The Solution: To overcome these challenges, a high-capacity Fristam FDS-4 twin screw pump was recommended. Its versatile design transfers multiple cheese types from the same vats with minimal shear, ensuring high product quality. With the ability to process a wide range of viscosities and textures, the FDS eliminates the need for extensive changeovers. Additionally, unlike other pumps, the FDS is built to Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) itself, eliminating the need for extra pumps, piping, and valves, simplifying operations.
Why It Worked: In this application, the FDS pump operates at 400 RPM during production and 1,000 RPM during CIP, ensuring minimal shear stress on the curd while maximizing pump longevity. This setup minimized fines and fat loss, maximizing yield. The pump’s robust construction improved operational reliability, reducing repairs, maintenance costs, and downtime.
The Benefits – the FDS pump provided: • Higher yield: Reduced fines and fat loss ensured maximum product recovery. • Reduced maintenance: Longer pump life and improved operational efficiency boosted uptime. • Automated cleaning: Built-in CIP capability eliminated the need for additional equipment. • Unmatched versatility: The FDS pump seamlessly handled a wide range of viscosities and textures, allowing the same vats to produce multiple cheese varieties with minimal changeover effort.
The Result: By incorporating Fristam FDS twin screw pumps, the dairy manufacturer achieved greater efficiency, improved product quality, and minimized downtime. The ability to seamlessly integrate with their automated system further streamlined operations, ensuring consistent production output. Additionally, the significant reduction in maintenance costs and pump-related downtime allowed the pump to pay for itself in under a year, delivering substantial long-term savings.
